Caldwell County Driveby - Trail, Maple Grove, Carolina

Caldwell County Driveby - Trail, Maple Grove, Carolina

DESCRIPTION

Pop pop pop goe the nine. Big climb to the shoulder of Joe White Mtn. Continue climbing and stay on the main road. Don't get carried away on the short but intense downhills. After 2.5 miles, there is a cabin on the right. Shortly after the cabin, there is a four way intersection that is pretty obvious. On the left, just before that intersection is a narrow, not so obvious trail. This is the fun stuff, but be careful not to snag your gold chains on the rhododendrons. There are turnoffs, but the through trail is straight ahead and obvious. The trail ends at FR 187. I think the metric century uses this road. Take a left on 187 and hump it back up to Maple Grove, but if you can stand more abuse, cross 187 and drop in for the steepest thing east of Beehive and make a left for the bushwhack out of there. The right will bring you down to John's River in someone's backyard.

It's all clear folks. February 2007. Good to go.

Customer Service

The top of the big downhill is in good shape as well.

The big ride that is mentioned a few reviews back is now well marked where to turn. There is a large clearing and the "road" is marked with a red blaze.

There is a bunch of deadfall out here at the present time. (March 2006) Still very fun, but your fun will be segmented. We need a coupla niggaz wif chainsaws to get medieval on it. Don't let the first eighth mile deter you. It is NOT indicative of what is to come. The floods of 2004 washed that section out terribly. The rest of the trail surface is fine.

There is another run off the side of FR 187 down into John's River. It's almost 2.5 miles of technical singletrack. If you come in from Murphy Rd/Adako Rd., 3.3 miles from the gate that marks the beginning of 187 proper. Right now there is a green soda bottle on a branch. Look up. How the hell did someone put that there? Hang a right (east). The trail looks like it goes to the right, but you gotta make a sharp left immediately. The right will quickly run out, so no harm done if you miss the left. At the first creek crossing, go right. That one is obvious. At the second creek crossing, go left. Hope you like rocks and creek crossings. The end of the trail widens to doubletrack and is on private property, but it seemed totally cool. You're not in anyone's backyard. Cruise down John's River and back over to Adako.

That uphill left on the way back to the car on 187??? "Closed to Vehicles" It was built for horses. Awesome trail to the top of Adams Mountain. The trouble is getting to the top.

The Driveby is open for business again. Someone cut out all the blowdown. Nice work. This is a fun extended downhill section. The climb up Joe White is NO FUN whichever way you do it. Bad news: there won't be any more woods on the Maple Grove end by the end of August 2004.

Customer Service

Got time for a really epic jaunt? As you hump it back up 187, take the THIRD right. The first right would be where you would come out from going straight across 187. After you take that, you can take ANY trail that goes downhill. They all go the same place. Then you are in deep debt and have to ride up NC 90 back up to the pass. There is a store out there.

The climb from the trailhead is fantastic. Once youre at the top it gets even better. The trail is sloppy in places but looks like it will be a local favorite. The single track is worth the time you put in for the climb. You get about a 3 mile downhill.

But onetwo.three and to the phour Puff and the Banger were beggin for sum more. After you Rat-tat-tat-tat over mister 0ne Eight Seven on the undercover cop the next section becomes ridiculously steep. No lack of incest here. Bee Hive and One Eight Seven are 1st cousins. Steep and fun Ill do it again. Hang left at bottom and Bushwhack back to 187. Pick up a tree or two along the way. Bust out the 20s and get ready for some steady rollin' and bullet dodging while you ride quart low along the One Eight Seven.

This one is a little rough around the edges since it doesn't see much use. But you'll find it if'n you look. There aren't many places like this any more.
