Hoosick Rail Trail - Trail, Hoosick Falls, York

Hoosick Rail Trail - Trail, Hoosick Falls, York

DESCRIPTION

Exclusively singletrack intermediate or better. Trail starts out pretty basic, but due to the small width you have to pay attention. About a mile into teh trail you run into an area that you can "explore" You'll find some mud holes, steep decents (short, but steep), streams to jump or ride through, just about everything. I'll let you know right now this is not a trai that is full of twists and turns, basically straight, but like I said extremely tight. I believe you can take this trail to Vermont too!!! And the best part about it is that it is nearly impossible to get lost for more than an hour! Have fun and explore upstate NY during the fall! Make sure you check out the bar scene after the ride...some serious characters in the town of Hoosick. Place to eat Babson's, get totally drunk at "T-Bones" ($1.00 beer!!!!) and the place is very friendly!

Rode this trail at lunch time for the first time today. I headed left (south). Not really much of a trail, but I was able to pick my way through fields and abandoned railroad tracks. I rode 4 miles south until I had to turn around and head back (I was on lunch). I will be going back. There was really no terrain, but i was able to get 8 miles in on my lunch break. I rated a 4 just because it's close to work. If I had to travel, it would be a 2.

This place was much more than stated on the posting by Sharpend. Being few and far between in a desolate area near VT, this is fine riding! Lots of jumps and head bangers (low branches)! Near a picnic area is worth exploring as the National Guard has cleared out some really nice trails that cross streams. And over a hill you'll find all sorts of riding.
Oh yeah, didn't make it to the Babson place, but did hit the the bar mentioned and a place called Rosies. Talk about cheap beer!! Wow. All I can say is ride the Rail!!

Well, it's OK; that's about it. I don't know where the other reviewers went but we followed directions and found a scenic ,pleasant, easy web of trails along the river that were 3 miles in total at best. No, you can,t get to VT, & there aint no 12+ miles out here. This is a nice jaunt for a few hours of relaxed, easy, and often wet singletrack. Good beginner stuff, and a great place for a swim and looking at the plethora of wildflowers. But hard-core, go elsewhere.

This place was a nice change from the technical stuff. It does go to Vermont (MA as well, but some on road)
the river isn't too safe to swim in as some locals told me that "Oak"(?) used to dump sewage into it for 20+years. So, ok, it sort of smells on hot days...but it is a nice ride and worth the trip to the area.

Skill level: Novice beginning, Medium to High for later parts of the trail.

I had trouble finding the entrance to the trail as per the directions given. Had to ask someone at Saint-Gobain plant to point me in the right direction.

The trail seemed a little overlarge at first (it looks big enough for a truck to drive down) and I took a wrong turn -- but I found it to be quite challenging once past the picnic area.

I ended up being covered head to toe in mud -- it was GREAT! It was also VERY hot, buggy, and no breeze -- I went through all the water in my camelback (I refilled using water from the river, which unfortunately I was later told NOT to do by a local and which also gave me severe diarrhea later in the day).

But all in all, I must admit that the number of jumps and tight turns, combined with the beautiful August sunshine and green hills made this a memorable experience.
