Carl Shipman - Trail, Cochiti Lake, Mexico

Carl Shipman - Trail, Cochiti Lake, Mexico

DESCRIPTION

Awesome downhill ride for about 6 miles to base of Cochiti Canyon. Screaming turns, with tons of pumice powder that makes you think you are skiing on this stuff. Definately not for the week at heart, and requires a significant level of riding experience. You will not be disappointed - this is one of the best downhill screamers in all of New Mexico! You will finish at the base of the canyon and cross a stream to get back on the dirt road that will take you the 10 miles or so back to Dixon's Orchid. Or - for the good challenge - turn right once you cross the stream and follow the dirt road to the trailhead for "Switchbacks" a 2 mile climb back out of the canyon. This is rideable in parts - and too steep in others. But it gets you nack out of the canyon fairly fast. Once you get back out of the canyon you will come to another dirt road - turnright and take another right later on. you will be about 6 miles from end of Crosstown. You can ride Crosstown back to your car - or you can just follow Fr 36. Congrats you just finsihed one hell of a ride!

I could not confirm this trail exists any longer. The area burned a few years back and is not the same as it was in 2003 when the original review was entered. The parking lot is there, but the trail is overgrown. I zig-zagged all over the area hoping to bisect the trail, but no dice. Finally, I ended up on an overgrown two track for about 5 miles that had fallen trees and thorn bushes for miles. Finally had to turn around and bushwhack back up to the forest road. Never got close to a quality trail and got all scratched up by the thorns.

Customer Service

Stay off that over grown dead end two track. It heads towards Santa Fe and dead ends on a mesa top far east of Cochiti.

Not found any yet. I used to ride up there before the fire and it was awesome. Not anymore. Some forest roads was all I found.

This is a great downhill trail dropping down into Cochiti Canyon on an old motorcross path. The trail hugs the canyon wall contour and has a few very tight swithcback turns. Length is nat as long as listed about, but it is a fairly long ride down.

Customer Service

Top to bottom is the only way I know of. This would be climbable, but would involve some hiking.
