Dry Pond Loop - Trail, Reno, Nevada

Dry Pond Loop - Trail, Reno, Nevada

Take US 395 to Mt. Rose Highway.
after about 4.5 miles, turn right onto N. Timberline Dr.
Drive about a mile and park along the side of the road. You should see a fire road, with trail signs on the corner, heading up the hill to the left.

The Trail:
Head up the fire road next to the trail signs. About 100 yards up, veer left on to the single track that head up the side of the hill. Follow this along, crossing the fire road again, keeping the creek on your right. Stick to the most obvious trail for about 2 miles or so. You will come to an obvious T in the trail. Go right towards the creek. After crossing the creek you have about a mile of grinding climb left with 3 relatively technical switchbacks depending on the season. After cresting the third switchback, open the shocks and drop your seat for a solid 3 miles of descent. Watch your speed as there are 4 switchbacks that can sneak up on you pretty quickly as well as hikers, dogs, horseback riders, and other bikers. Follow the most obvious trail all the way down, keeping the creek on your left. Look for a small bridge when you come to the crossing, or blast through the water if that's your thing. Follow the trail along until it opens up to another fire road. Turn right and follow it along back to N. Timberline Dr. and your car.

Awesome trail with nothing overly technical, but enough to keep your attention. The climb to the top is a pretty good workout, especially if your aren't used to the altitude. Be sure to take in the beautiful views of Reno and Washoe Valley as you climb higher and higher. The descent is loads of fun with a few tight switchbacks and plenty of small drops and little rock sections.
