About time this area received a separate review--the above route is fine, though the land owner of the Keats Rd parking area has been urging the cops to ticket/ tow people who park on his land (lot's of trouble with local high school kids pulling in and partying in the field and on the mud mile!) so, be circumspect if you park here. I recommend parking at the other end either on Hillside Rd or ridge rd depending on whether or not I'm going to ride north Sugarloaf. The Long ridge (which runs from Sugarloaf South in S. Deerfield to Poet's seat in Greenfield) serves up numerous short rides or one rather epic long one--to suit all tastes. Lot's of climbing or very little if you stick to the pocumtuck trail. Nothing truly technical, but plenty of rugged, dogged ups and downs, and depending on how and which way you hit the powerlines there is the potential for fairly hairy high speed down hilling or excrutiating, anerobic uphills. All in all, a local favorite--lots of great lookout views of the valley--especially wonderful on a clear starry night! Customer Service Park at Hillside avenue, S. Deerfield by the gate on Sugarloaf North. I like to start with N. Sugarloaf-just follow the trails up and around. After the Sugarloaf warm up head out to Hillside rd, go left (yes you can follow the blue dots into the woods here--but I recommend roading it up the hill). Take Hillside and go right on north hillside, then make your first right on Pocumtuck (I think) and then climb some more and make a right on ridge rd--at the end of this rd you officially begin the Pocumtuck trail and the deerfield ridge. I like to head a ways up to the Clapps Pond trail on the right, drop down this fun trail bearing left, right and then left again (until you right below clapp's pond)-across the wide brook and straight out to the power line climb, make a left and have at it (this portion of trail is called Stairmaster by some locals and for good reason--builds character!)-From here there are countless options-explore to the north or return by going south (left). All different types of trails and terrain is not at all technical. Great place to take beginners! No matter which end you start at you'll be doing plenty of climbing right away (especially if you start on Keets Rd.) but your reward will be finishing with plenty of downhill! Plenty of trail options and lots to explore. You can extend your ride significantly by adding North Sugarloaf and/or Greenfield Ridge to your ride. Customer Service On Keets Rd, Park in the field on the right. Start riding up the pavement to the trailhead on the right (blue dot). Follow the blue dot trail all the way to a dirt rd (Pine Nook Rd.) Go straight across the road on to another trail. At the end, go left thru the gate then right up up up the access rd to the ski lift. Take the trail to the left of the lift. Enjoy a nice view from Pocumtuck rock then get back on the main trail. Continue to follow the ridgeline trail all the way to Ridge Rd OR look for the Clapp Pond trail on the left (after the power lines). At the very bottom of the hill (by the pond) make a right at the 4-way. When you spot the blue dot trail again, follow it all the way past the old slaughterhouse to N. Sugarloaf Mtn for an even longer ride. Backtrack on the ridge to P. Rock, go down the first steep hill on the access rd and go straight into the woods (instead of left). Take a right at the 4-way. At the end, go left up the gravel hill to a clearing, then left into the woods. At the end turn right then cross the access rd again and go thru the gate and right on the trail (you’ve been here before). After you cross Pine Nook Rd. again, take the singletrack to the left of the giant mud puddle. Keep making right turns until you see a jeep rd. on your left . Spot a double track on your left and ride it to the field. You’ll see your car across the field. Watch out for the poison ivy! Similar Products Used: Greenfield Ridge, Hawley SF, North Sugarloaf, Mt.
