Buffalo Creek - Trail, Pine, Colorado

Buffalo Creek - Trail, Pine, Colorado

DESCRIPTION

Awesome! Long, sandy in spots, fast, twisting, foresty (when not burned down to the ground), confusing without a map or friend who has been there a lot before. This trail is part of Colorado Trail which extends some 400 miles from Denver to Durango. Each and every ridable section of this trail is epic in nature! I usually start at the bottom of the big hill that I mentioned above and once I reach the trail head I follow the signs for the Colorado Trail and return on a trail leading North back into Pine. This Trail dumps out on to a maintained road back into town. I wish I could be more descriptive but the maps of the park suck so bring a friend and/or ask other trail users where the trails go. That farther you get away from the parking area the less crowded the trail becomes so keep your eyes open. there are also several roads that cross the trail that if you were desperate you could take those back to the trail head or back into Pine. Have Fun!

Lots of great riding. Can get crowded at the Colorado Trailhead beside the highway, but if you look around you can find solitude anyway. I'd suggest going early in the day if you are a weekender. My only complaint is the pea gravel trail surface. Can't really get away from it. The area is too dry to be nice and loamy. Some areas are extremely grainy sand. Get used to two wheel drifting and countersteering. That being said, the trail Sandy Wash is a very fun trail, at least for riding downhill.

So many trails to choose. Any of the local singletrack guides give their permutation. Buy the Trails Illustrated map for the Deckers/Rampart range and the Kenosha/Lost Creek. There are some differences from reality, but not enough to get you too confused.

Consider Pine Valley Ranch. The Strawberry Draw return singletrack is one of the funnest, fast, twisty adrenaline pumpers on the front range. You can actually access all the Buffalo Creek trails by starting from Pine Valley Ranch. Most of the Buff Cr trails area higher elevation too. Bring a map and the willingness to get lost for an hour or two.

Lots of rolling hills, nice fast sections. Very crowded on nice days though...this is a great trail for a group of people to enjoy biking, all levels of riders can enjoy themselves here, beginners that can keep their wind will not feel left behind on either of these trails.

Customer Service

Park at the top of the hill mentioned above, then take either trail head. Colorado Trail heading West or the Chair Rock trail heading North East.

The front range is packed of similar and better trails.

I rode this area for the first time yesterday. It's a real nice area if you can tolerate the sand and pea gravel on the lower portions near Buffalo Creek. Slickrock on Baldy and Charlie's was fun. Gashouse was a blast coming down. You need a map for this area or ride with someone who knows the area well. I gave it a 4 rating because of the sand.

Park at the junction of FS 550 and 543. Ride on the closed portion of 543, through a burned forest section, until you see a wide, dry, sandy wash on the left side of the road. Walk or ride if you can up the wash to the Gashouse Gulch Trail (difficult). Take G.G. Trail to the Baldy Trail (moderate). Take Baldy to the top where it intersects with G.G. Trail. Take a right on G.G. Trail and follow it to a logging road. Take a right on the road and ride about 1/4 mile to Homestead (moderate). Take Homestead past Charlie's Cutoff (moderate) and keep making right turns at trail junctions. You'll eventually end up at Charlie's Cutoff. Take a right on Charlie's and ride some slickrock sections back to Homestead. Take a left on Homestead to the road. Take a right on the road back to Gashouse Gulch Trail. Descend on G.G. Trail (real fun!) through trees and boulder sections to a Forest Service Road (I'm not sure of the road number). Take a left on the road and follow it for less than a mile back to your auto. You won't get lost if you look for signs directing you towards Buffalo Campground. I parked about 1/4 mile from the campground entrance.

Incredible ride! Not much on the technical stuff but fun, fun, fun. Very fast sections and a nice alternating up and down feel unlike most Front Range rides. Novices can ride this trail and enjoy it too because there is literally only one section that could even be considered technical.

Customer Service

Park at the Colorado Trail parking lot off FR 550 (at the top of the hill after the town of Buffalo Creek). Then ride south to Meadow Creek campground. You can turn around here or better yet head up the Green Mountain loop which is a beautiful and much less traveled section. Total ride with the Green Mountain loop is about 18.5 miles.

A fun ride, particularly for beginners, but it is CROWDED, CROWDED, CROWDED! I probably passed 50 riders the last time rode this trail. So much for solitude.

Customer Service

Follow the above route. Some of the spur trails are fun too.

The trail has some very fast downhills and the climbs are not really all that bad. Most of the trail I thought was smooth and rolling most of the time it felt like we were going downhill which we weren't it was a nice change of pace.

Customer Service

Follow Robs directions below that was the way we went and it was great.

Nice ride. Not technical and very uphill at first up to the gashouse conncetion, then all downhill from there. Only negative is at times very sandy I do like the pea size granite though. Did the entire loop and then did baldy to the gashouse trail, lower half, and made it almost 13 miles for the day. All sorts of trails out there but heard great reviews about this section. Was more than pleased with the trail and am planning on coming back again.
