5 mile itself is a pretty easy trail but is fun to ride at speed. There are some technical sections where the trail is very sketchy, and some areas where a missed turn means a 15 footer into the river. (I've done it) This trail used to be a lot better but the flood of '95 obliterated entire sections of it which means now you have to do a bit of hike $ bike. It is gradually getting worn back to normal by use but really could use some work. There are tons of unknown singletracks which branch off every so often. 5 mile also has access to some killer freeriding terrain, but if you don't know where it is already then I'm not telling you!

Customer Service

The 5 mile trail follows the river on the side of the valley opposite Paradise Canyon. The trail itself starts where the paved city path reaches the river, turns right, and goes north up the valley. Instead of following the pavement, turn left and go south onto the singletrack. You can also reach this trail by following pretty much any singletrack from the college to the river....they all eventually drop out onto 5 mile. You can follow this trail all the way down to a gravel access road that will bring you up near the airport, but I reccommend riding it as an out & back to avoid riding on the highway and get the most singletrack out of it.

This is an awsome fast trail. I suggest Taking a left about 150 meters into the trail and climbing to the top of the collee. From there I would bomb right back down the way you came and you can intercept the trail right where you turned up. Climbing this little section is well worth the speed you get on the way down. ALso be care ful of dog owners and unsuspecting hikers. Speeds can really get up there, especially if youve got some prior experience on the trail.

once you get to the trail its pretty fast (if you want it to be)take time to go up and down some of the deer trails.
there is a neat-o section where you hug the coulee side
a bit (ride it fast)
unfortunatly this trail leads you no where and is washed out in areas.

Customer Service

drop in anywhere from senic drive. there are some realy fast entries.follow down to the wussy paved path and head towards the leth country club or across from paridise canyon. the paved trail ends cross the river (there is a rock path but ride the river it's not hard)
ride the trail on the other side untill it extinguishes
and cross the river you will see another rock path, ride up to the next crappy paved section and continue on till you find your first decent length trail on your right. Follow and enjoy.(good for beginers to start on and adjust speed to make more difficult)

A great local trail. It has seen better days though. There was a time when you could ride many Km's along the river, through a grove of trees, and exit (illegally) up a gravel rode that comes out waaayyyy behind the airport. Good epic ride..........sigh.
Anyways, its a good trail, constantly changing. Wicked wildlife viewing. If you want more of a challenge, ride it at night, watch out for porcupines.

Trail build??? IF I ever catch somebody with a shovel messing with a coulee trail in the name of trail building I'll kick their ass. Most of these trails were formed by use not shovels & hoes. Funny that nobody has rode enough south of the "playground" since the floods to bring the trail back to life. The trail was constanty sloughing off into the OLD MAN every week the trail took a different shape, the wind( some days around 120Kph ) helped with this too.

Customer Service

As an original rider of this trail I can honestly say the name of the trail is really the 6 mile ride it was named like 12 years ago so don't argue..

This is a great trail for all levels of riders. There are some good rollers, bumps, and technical sections throughout. If you are an advanced rider this trail is wicked to take at speed. There are many single track trails that branch off of the main trail that offer different types of terrain. Watch for deer, porcupines, hikers, and other riders because it can get very busy especially on the chance day that it isnt windy. I live in Calgary now and have heard that there is some weenies pretending to be hard core by modifying trails with shovels and hoes. This is what gets mountainbikers bad press and trails get closed riders as a result. Let nature take its course and leave the trails alone!

Customer Service

for easy access drop in south of the college at the rcmp training course. There is however, dozens of points you can start from.

There are tons of trails throughout the river valley and my best advice is to explore. You will understand what I mean when you visit the city because you will see single track trails all over the place. There is trails for the freerider, xc, and even slalom type trails.
