Sketchy at best in front. Feels more plastic-y than rubbery.

Came on a used bike I recently picked up with the intention of letting my wife ride it. I tuned up the bike before we went out and went for a quick test around the block. The front tire about slipped out from under me just turning in the alley. WTF? I decided to let my wife ride my bike so I rode the one with the Hardrock'rs cuz I didn't feel safe about her riding on these tires and I wanted to check them out. On the trail the rear seemed to hook up ok but the front was crap. The trail was mostly tacky with some harder spots and a little mud here and there. I didn't feel confident on these tires on any of it but they did seem to climb ok. The front just seemed totally sketchy. Awful on pavement but that was expected.

These tires perform extremely well in:
1) Slightly wet trail
2) Light mud
3) Loose, thick hardpack/sand

These tires perform "okay" (meaning you might have a sketchy second or two, but you won't kill yourself in:
1) Nasty, Gnarly, very thick mud.
2) Loose, thin hardpack/sand
3) The road when it's dry

These tires perform terribly on:
1) The wet road. You will kill yourself even if you are just going to the grocery store half a mile away. When you brake, they lock up because there's no friction between them and the road, then you can't steer and you go sideways. It's happened to me multiple times. No fun.


For the $20 that they costed me, I was amazed at the quality. They do what they're supposed to do well, and if you want a very very inexpensive mountain bike tire for the trail, go for it. You can't really go wrong. The knobs are huge for anyone who hasn't seen them in person. Just remember that they perform fairly poorly on the road. But hey, you aren't hear to read road bike tire review, are you? I gave it 4 chilis because there are, of course, better ones out there.

Fast rolling, good ride (nice and firm structure), great on pavement, good for flat protection, awesome for thin rear tire for climbing, great for pavement and trail use.

Large center knob area makes it slip a lot in greasy trail conditions. Confused on the side knob design. It has been scary at times for handling and cornering grip as a front tire.

For the money:

This tire is great if you do a lot of pavement riding but also do some casual but not fast hard cornering trail/dirt riding. It rides really nice, is constructed in a way that makes it solid, and has good flat protection.

I will say that because of it's tread design's flattish tractor like profile, it has been an excellent rear tire that provides a great combination of fast rolling and great climbing traction! I have been very pleased with it in the rear!

Actually, counter to some other comments here I found the cornering traction to be much better than I had expected.

Not the greatest tires wear wise.
Oddly, for some reason my front tire wore out faster than my rear one.
I think it was a defect because there were 5 consecutive knobbies that suddenly wore down to a much greater extent than the knobbies on the rest of the tire....this on the FRONT mind you, so it wasn't from locking the brakes and skidding.

I can see the blue colored under layer now on those kobbies now like they had been sheared off...or peeled off.

My back tire has no such problem, but the front is a disappointment.

I ride about 200 miles a week.

Good tires if you don't get one of the bad ones.

very durable. have never had a flat with it. has barely worn down. great for cornering as a front tire. pretty good at rolling on pavement too.

at first i had this tire on the back of my bike and it felt pretty slippery on some gravel. now i have a wtb velociraptor and that can handel anything, even ice.

i love this tire in the front, would not buy it for the rear. very cheap tire and has not worn down easily. I really only use it for cross country and riding on roads and bike paths.

Tractor tread does well in deep water when reversed. Good traction when going fast on hard dirt.

Hard and dangerous to bank on turns. DON"T DO IT!

Good tire for all around use. You have to rotate them about once a year though. I did have it pop going over some rocks, but that will happen with any tire. This tire is excellent in deep water when reversed. If you just go to your local state park and ride around on those trails it will be fine. Hums on road. Love the tractor tread. Will work for downhillers too. I took it to eastern ohio and ran it down some big hills. Great traction when going above 35 mph.

A good tire for "just riding around." Pretty good on all surfaces: no buzz in pavement, but enough chunk to get through the stretches of sugar sand that plague Florida. Rolling resistance is good.

Poor directional stability on loose surfaces. Remember how I said it'll get you through the sand, well you'll be all over the place doing it. Cornering on loose dirt or sand is also entertaining.

Good choice for the back on a bike that'll be riding paved and hardpack trails. Good enough to get you through anything. Too treacherous for the front in this land of sand and mud. Perfect for my road/park bike.
