Okay. I lied. Mine is the model YX8000. Essentially the same bike sans the front disc brake. I used to work at Toys R Us back in the late 1990s as a bike builder and found this bike hanging on a hook back in the stock room with all the other "defect" bikes. In other words, ones that were either damaged or the bike builder screwed up the assembly. That was the case here. The manager let me buy it for like a hundred bucks and right away I went to work replacing and upgrading the components including a pair of Maxxis Helter Skelter 26 x 2.35 tires that had aggressive MTB treads that just barely cleared the rear fork by millimeters. When I was done I had a killer bike equipped with mostly free upgrades. Now here it is 23 years later and I just dusted it off a couple of weeks ago. Doctor's orders, "Get your ass back on that bike!". Who am I do argue with my doctor? So gone are the Helter Skelters as I am now using this for road riding. Now it's equipped with a new cushier seat, higher rise handle bars, 6000 lumens of LED lighting, Map My Ride phone app plus the long overdue removal of the dork disc. This has all come together to bring this bike into it's new phase.

Weakness:

Huge diameter tubing equates to a fairly heavy bike considering it's aluminum. Still lighter than a cheaper steel model.

Weakness:

None that I know of. Compared to NEW bicycles that are sold in Toys R Us, Walmart, K-Mart, Sears, JC Penny's, and most bike shops - this 1998 vintage Pacific 8500 is classic Range Rover and the rest of the flock are Jeep YJ's. Sure some of the NEWER ones may have Carbon Fiber Elements and more precision accessories - but they aren't necessarily a better bike in the long run. Just lighter. This Pacific 8500 is built like a tank - but is still quite light for the sheer size of it.

I have a Pacific YX 8500 / Shimano 24 speed ALIVIO that is brand new, never been ridden, with Zero miles on the clock. It's simply the best looking Mountain Bike in it's class - even after nearly 20 years. This Bike was going to be part of a Bicycle Themed Cafe that never quite got off the ground. So it was put into the den of my house and set on top of Book Cases where it resides to this day and is proudly displayed, lovingly protected and cared for. It was purchased at Toys R US, and price tag was $899 in 1997-98. There is only other bike in the Pacific Line up that is higher than this model as it came with rare Magnesium Wheels that cost a grand for the pair. I believe it was a 9500 model. I believe that bike was around fifteen hundred dollars. The Store didn't carry one and said they'd have special order it...I doubt very much that anyone ever ordered one. The 8500 I purchased, was the only one they had at the time. I never saw another on display there. So, I think these bikes are somewhat rare as they were very pricey in their day. They had various other lower level models for much less... This Pacific 8500 is - NOT - for sale at any price. It's going to stay right where it is... maybe someday I'll take it to bike shows.

Qulaity of the frame and the smooth travel. Entry level components. Looks of the bike.

Weakness:

None really changed out the entry level components and upgraded like you would any other bicycle after some usage.

I bought this bike back in 2000, last one at ToysRus. Like everybody else, I was looking for an entry level more bang for your buck full suspension bike. Local bike stores $800 and up, bought this for $500 and it was well worth. After about 5yrs of riding upgraded the components. It is a heavy bike though, but will take what the trail will give. I still have it but will be selling it soon, I have about 7 bikes now ranging from DJ to DH and all in between. This bike got me started in mountain biking, if your entry level person and you find one cheap, I recommend it. I will say though when pacific started they where trying to make a name for themselves with the quality of bike in mind, now however not so much.

Good solid hand welded frame!!!

Weakness:

excellent frame, but they put cheap hardware/accessories on the bike.

Kick ass bike!!!!!!!! By the time i was done rebuilding this bike, i stuck another grand into it. Really a great bike for the price though. With a little imagination and some extra cash; this is THE bike of all bikes!!!! forget paying four or five grand on bike when i spent about 1400.00. I made a great bike even greater!!!!

Strength:

Good price, good quality components, been able to keep up and even get ahead of the big boys on their Cannondales, Litespeeds and Treks

Weakness:

Sun Racer cassettes, chain

This is a really enjoyable bike. I realize the weight is a bit heavy for the uphills... but it might not hurt to get a little lead out. I find the bike very comfortable and full of action. It might take a bit of getting used to the bob up and down, but I do not find a loss of grip. I first realized the beauty of this bike going down Clemmer Trail at Chilhowee Park. I was riding behind some guys as I came up behind them... the Litespeeds and Cannondales bounced all around due to their lightness, whereas the YX 8500 bulldozed down the trail. This is a really good bike and as components wear I plan to upgrade... the frame is good and strong... good welds at all juction points. I changed the Richey seat to a Liberator and I am adding clipless pedals... otherwise I feel this has been a very good choice. It's just like buying your clothes at Wal-mart... you get good performance for the price... if you want Abercrombie & Fitch you pay for it... but I'll bet neither will last any longer in the wash.

Tons of options at a discount price (RST front disc brake, aluminum frame, RST DH Elite front fork & DMV DV-6B rear suspension, Ritchey Z-Max tires,Ritchey handlebars & seat,
Shimano Alvio components; Awesome cushy ride on even the most rocky trails (at least for Wisconsin.)

Weakness:

Have to get used to the pogo-stick feeling in the front fork (only really feel it on pavement, it pretty much goes away on the dirt trails); No grip-shift on handlebars.

This is one awesome bike well worth the money. With all the options on it, you would be looking at twice the price if not more with another well-respected brand. Pacific may not be on par with Cannondale or Trek, but if you're looking for a dual-suspension mountain bike able to withstand the rigors of daily use on rocky, root-filled , hilly mountain bike trails and the road and are on a budget ($300-$500.00)
this is the bike for you.
