Strength:

Has the excellent mechanism and bearings of the previous model

Weakness:

Too much of the cage has been removed and this means no foot support.

Wow. I have made a mistake here thinking this is going to give me more support than me existing XT Trail Pedal. The Race pedal has just the same support. I do not understand what this is supposed to be. The cage does not come in contact with the shoe no matter how soft your shoes are. Shimano have paired away just too much metal this time. I agree this is a Race pedal with a cage. So it is more weight but no benefit. Do not expect this pedal to give you the same overall foot support that the M785 gives.

Strength:

Has the good qualities of the previous model

Weakness:

No Foot Support from the Cage What so Ever.
This is not a Trail Pedal.
This is the Race Pedal with a bit of a cage.

Really disappointed with this new XT "Trail" pedal. I like the support you get from the cage when riding heel down. I know it is not massive but it is significant and makes a difference when you wear softer spd shoes as I do. This new pedal is cut away so that the cage does nothing at all. In fact it has the same foot area as the Race Pedal but with the added weight and cost of a so called "Trail" pedal. I really don't understand where Shimano are coming from with this. The old model is much better. The cheaper SLX/Deore M530 has much more support.
