Cannondale Beast of the East Plus bikes

DESCRIPTION

Beast of the East is reborn as a confidence-inspiring, ridiculously fun 27+ hardtail. And all that traction, float and confidence that make it great for the tangled east coast forests also make it great anywhere the trails go up stuff, down stuff, over or around stuff.

Strength:

Objectively good looking.

Weakness:

Heavy, heavy heavy, heavy.
Chain ring size is limited to 30t ONLY.
Proprietary designs (chain ring and fork - although I LOVE Lefties - only shocks I use).
Terrible tires (hope you NEVER get a flat).
Climbs like a tank.
Feels SLOW even descending (although I know I descend faster on this than my XC Flash).
All around, I just FEEL slow on this bike even when I am going faster. FEEL is important.

Save your money. This bike is way too heavy and climbs like a full-suspension downhill rig. I LOVE Cannondale. I've ridden Cannondales since 2008. My 2011 Flash is still in my stable and my only bike left (besides the Beast which I'm selling) in my mtb stable.

I got two flats in one ride (never thought I would flat with these heavy tires). It took two of us 30 minutes to change first flat. I'm riding tubeless and the bead just did not want to unseat from the rim. After the 2nd flat we could not unseat it, no matter how we tried. I had to run back to my car with the bike.

Limited gear ratios. You cannot change the chain ring to ANYTHING but a 30t ring. And then you have to buy it from Cannondale due to the proprietary nature of the ring.

Low BB. Pedal strikes galore. Get ready for it. It is very unnerving. It's the worst bike I've ever had in this respect.

To make this bike POSSIBLY work better for me (and that would not address the weight or low BB issues) I would have to go with 2.8 tires (less rolling resistance and more feel so I should be faster and feel faster) and change the cassette (if that is possible to get the desired ratios I'm used to). And it would cost at least $400 to do so. However the risk is that it still won't feel right, or the BB would drop even MORE by going with 2.8 tires.

Carver Gnarvester (Ti). I rode a friend of mines Carver 29+ with 3.0 inch tires and rigid setup. This bike absolutely FLIES. I am way faster on it and FEEL faster on it. I also climb as well on it as on my XC bike (I know a big part of this is that the gear ratios match what I have on my Cannondale Flash). I got sold on PLUS due to riding this bike. I so regret buying the BotE instead of building a Carver. But since I LOVE Cannondale so much, I thought buying the BotE would be great. Huge mistake.

Strength:

Bike is so much fun . Was really happy about the geometry and efficiency of the short chain stays. SRAM entry 1 X 11 shifts smoother and nicer than my xx1 setups? Dropper post works great and is cool to have if your just playing around with the bike. The lefty Is unreal with the fat tire it's like a floating Cadillac . Highly recommended great bang for your buck ! Shimano Deore brakes are awesome just like the power of the new xt 8000 and almost identical weight from my research. Like the wide 760 bars w the shorter stem

Weakness:

Bikes a little heavy but to be expected (28 lbs ). I understand the wheels/ tires are tublress ready. Supposedly 4-500 grams per tube so converting should drop a lot of rolling weight. Also trans X dropper post is almost 800 grams so may look at a light carbon QR post . And get her down to maybe 24 lbs would b awesome .

Highly recommend d the lefty beast of the east awesome all around bike and very comfy ride!
