Kona Honzo CR Trail 29er Hardtail

DESCRIPTION

Full squish bikes may get all the attention these days, but nothing compares to riding a hardtail on the trail, and the Honzo CR Trail is perhaps the one bike that can steal the limelight. Its aggressive stance, nimble-handling carbon frame and mischievous attitude are characteristics that were born on Pacific Northwest trails, from the days when the ride was all about playing and having fun, even when things turned burly.

Strength:

Weight, speed, fun factor, geometry and specs.

Weakness:

back end a little harsh. Spendy for high-end build.

This is a surprisingly unique bike. Most carbon hardtails on the market are very XC oriented, which means steep angles and 100mm fork. I wanted something more trail oriented. I test rode this bike and saw its potential, but wasn't happy with the build because I wanted 1X12 and better wheels, so I went the custom route. I am not disappointed. This bike is a solid climber, corners like crazy and bombs downhill. You will have to dust off some or your old-school skills if you've gotten spoiled on full suspension bikes, but it's an easy transition. I immediately started setting PRs on Strava on trails I've ridden dozens of times. It competes with my FS bike for speed on many downhills, and I honestly think it corners better. It's a slicer and dicer in the corners, holding sharp, clean lines that keep me in the sweet spot in the middle of the trail more often than dancing on the edges. My only minor knock is the rear end feels a little harsh compared to my Cannondale Flash. You feel those sharp hits, but for the overall performance of the bike, it's a trade off I will gladly take. It is, after all, a hardtail.
