Was looking for a dicount/deal on 2008 in February 2009 timeframe. Looked @ Conte's Newport News website & listed on the bottom of THEIR website it states the following: "We have GREAT DEALS on 2008 Models - Come in and ask today!", So I call & ask what model 08 MTB's they have on hand & told to come in. I explain that it 40 miles to get to his shop & reassured "THAT I WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OFF.". When I arrive on Saturday afternoon ask for help about 08 deals. I am shown full price 08 bikes, no discount. Also informed we do not discount bikes. Then I recount my conversation & their webpage note above. After about 10 minutes owner informs person helping me that I am mistaken. CONTE's REDMILL is one having moving sale & this a corporate site comment. Salesmen apologizes to which I say it is not your fault that Owner does not know what his website states.

Get home about one hour later to look up website which did list the above deal comment & based on Bike shops take care of you comment would imply a discount. I call shop, was on hold for about 5 minutes since apparently they have dial up internet, to complain. Owner gets back on the phone & said he did not realize this was on his webpage. What business does know what is on their website? No other Conte's has this listed on their website. COnte's Norfolk actually lists bikes which are discounted, some @ 40% off. Also informs me they can take care of me. Riddle me this? Would you go back after this?

By the way the same note is still on their webpage. Why would I beleive it now.

Customer Service

Based on above not sure I would trust them. Maintenance is about integrity.

Conte's is building on the great reputation of their Newport News store by selling franchises. I am posting to the original shop site because this comes up first when you search...and because the owners need to know how badly customer service has suffered in the new stores. Check out the reviews for the Arlington Conte's on Yelp - only 2 stars.

I went there in November to buy a commuter bike, and ended up with around $1500 worth of Cannondale Bad Boy and supporting gear. They had the bike I wanted in stock, and the salesperson seemed friendly and knowledgeable. But I got home and found a $7 charge on my credit card for a bottle cage...which the sales person offered to me like he was giving me a freebie for making the sale so easy. What kind of shop risks losing a customer to make an additional .01% profit?

The salesperson seemed to be telling me that the Bad Boy was a great bike for commuting...but after three months of daily riding I begin to see that it is a great bike for MTBRs looking to move to a faster city bike...and not a great bike for long time road bike riders like me...like going from a Ferrari to an SUV. So now, instead of experiencing the joy I should have from a great bike, every time I get on the bike, I curse Conte's for being cheap, careless and apparently only interested in selling to the 15 or 20 people who go racing with them.

I would appreciate your staying away from Conte's new shops.

I love this shop and love visiting Walter and Sandy. We bought both our road bikes and mountain bikes from this Conte's, and the service is awesome. This place is definitely the friendliest and coolest I have ever been to. Will be sad to move, wish we could take them with us :(

They have alot of bikes.

Customer Service

Eh, I walked in there, and it was 5 min before I was greeted. They were busy, so I understood. However, as soon as I started talking to someone, they told me I needed a different bike than the one I was looking at. Then I asked about the bike that I wanted, and they showed me the cheapest model of it. So I asked about the better version, and he gave me this look like I was asking for something that did not exist.

Very disappointed for a store that had a good rep.

This shop is way way overated. Their service manager Greg is a complete jerk. I went in there very recently and this guy gives me serious attitude and is rude to me for asking a question about my fork. The he precedes to insult me by saying the problem is I don't have a full suspension bike. I don't know if he's an 'elitist mechanic' or just naturally good at being a jackass but I will never take my bike there to get serviced again. If you live in Arlington Brendan at big wheel bikes is an outstanding mechanic and super friendly, go there. They do good work and are reasonable, or, go to bicycle pro shop in gtown, they do excellent work with no attitude. Why patronize a store that treats a customer rudely and doesn't appreciate their business.

Conte's in Newport News is fantastic. I've been to many shops on the peninsula including Williamsburg and Newport News, and this one tops them all for higher end Mountain bike equipment. If you need parts, they will be in stock or be available in a day or two. Here's what I've discovered, Walter will beat most competitor’s prices, on his inventory or give you a good price on a bike direct from the factory. Don't waste your time driving around comparison shopping. I did that for most of my equipment and it was a waste of time because Conte's in Newport News was consistently the best.

Customer Service

Every time I've been in the shop the customer service has been great. Walter (owner) is very reasonable and will take good care of loyal customers. Sandy (sales manager)

This IS the best shop in all of Virginia I found while living in the area for two years. Walter and Sandy are top notch people! Awesome customer service, weather you are buying a bike or just in for a tube. I went on one of their shop rides and meet about 25 other people that felt the same way as me about this shop. AWESOME!!!

Conte's Bicycle & Fitness Equipment in Newport News - Hilton Village - is one of the best shops I've been to. They have a great selection of bikes, really friendly and knowledgeable staff and the owner, Walt Gardner, is just fabulous. They have a big ride on Saturdays through residential Newport News and along the James River.

Customer Service

You can't beat Conte's of Newport News for their service. You can trust them to do a great job.

You won't find better people than the crew at this dealership. Now owned by Walter, you can't find a better man. My first experience here was fantastic but as it turns out, it was typical of them. I had purchased a Giant XTC from a Bass Pro shop in Dallas Texas and left the bike there to use when I was in town. It had lost a cap off the top of its fork. While at home in Newport News, I went into the shop and there I met Walt. After translating my explicit description, “you know that thingy that screws into the top of the fork” well mine is gone, Walt brought me into his shop. He dug around for a minute and came up with a bag that looked like everything that I was missing. No charge he said, but as I objected, he added you’ll be back. How do you not like a shop like that?

Walter leads roadie rides every weekend with a no drop policy. Some of us heftier fellows can be a tad slower than those thinner racy types but there is always someone who is fine and rolls a long at the back with us. It is hard to tell who works there sometimes. The customers hang out and are often as helpful as the employees. Keep hanging around and you too can become family.

Customer Service

Yes. It really is.
