Beacon Bicycle (Howell) - Bikeshops, Monmouth, Jersey

DESCRIPTION

Ted Rovins founded our company in 1930 as Beacon Auto Stores. The original store was located in Bridgeton, New Jersey and satellite stores soon followed. Bicycles were carried as a sideline to automotive parts and accessories. Traditionally, bikes were a big Christmas season item and the chain sold mostly family and modestly priced models for many years.

In the 1970,s during the “Bike Boom”, Beacon began to sell high-end models and components. At that time, full service shops were implemented and the stores took on the appearance of full sales and service bicycle dealers.

In the early 1980’s Mitch Rovins entered the family business and began “Beacon Bicycle Pro Shop, which catered to road enthusiasts and BMX riders. Mitch’s first shop was a mile from the Egg Harbor Township; New Jersey BMX Racing Track and his business thrived as a result. He sponsored both Road and BMX racing teams. As a result he developed a large following of loyal customers. Beacon moved to Tilton Road in Northfield in 1982 and entered its greatest growth phase. Its present multi-department location, is over 16,000 square feet. It provides warehousing for three additional locations and serves as the company headquarters.

The Vineland, NJ location consolidated the Cumberland County stores in1987 and was recently remodeled after a fire. Other branch stores include Toms River, added in 1991 and our latest venture, Howell, NJ, occurred in 1998. The Howell store was formerly known as “Bicycle World” and has the distinction of being located in front of the Central Jersey BMX Race Track. The store is approximately 7,500 square feet and has recently been expanded to offer a greater presentation of clothing, helmets, accessories and BMX supplies.

The present staff at each location of Beacon Cycling and Fitness is well-trained and consists of mature professionals. They are supplemented by experienced part-time employees who return every year for the busy spring and summer seasons. The development of superior customer service and exciting sales presentation are the hallmarks of our mission statement. The results are the numerous vendor awards and bicycle industry recognition as a “Perpetual winner of the Top 100 USA Bicycle dealers” and most recently the "Bicycle Retailer & Industry News" Top 100 Bicycle Retailers placing Beacon Cycling and Fitness in the top 100 American Bicycle dealers.

Beacon sponsors both road and BMX teams, supports local cycling events, BMX racing tracks, local cycling clubs, and charity rides in various communities.

Bought my bike at the other store down south. I brought my Wahoo in here as the gears were not shifting nicely. I got a really fast repair and replaced the rear sprocket and optioned for the new chain at the same time. I was given a choice of component levels and told I could wait on the chain swap if I wanted. NO pressure and fast friendly service. I also got some tips for maintenance from the friendly bike tech as I am new to off road gear. I was using only the smaller rear gears he explained and I wore them out quickly as a result. I have had only good times at this store so far. Been in about 5 times. Got my free tune ups there as well and no wait, no issues.

Customer Service

Perfect and friendly.

I will pay the (sometimes)slightly higher cost for some gear for the convenience and nice treatment I get when I am in the store.

I’ve had mixed experiences at this shop ranging from amicable conversation with a bicycle mechanic to the sense of apathy from the manager, thus leaving me unsure of whether to continue my business there—right now, it is out of simple convenience. There is a decent selection of bikes and accessories, unfortunately the latter is overpriced. It is difficult to compete with online warehouses on prices though; therefore a store needs to maintain a high level of customer service to make up. I have yet to take my bike in for any major repairs and would be hesitant until I hear more peoples experiences with the store.
